SMiShing Scams: Protect Your Personal Information

‘SMiShing’ is a deceptive tactic that leverages cell phone text messages to trick victims into disclosing sensitive personal information such as card numbers, CVV2 codes, and PINs. These fraudulent text messages often contain a website address or a phone number that connects to an automated voice response system, requesting personal information from unsuspecting recipients.

Examples of SMiShing Messages:

  • Text messages originating from notice@jpecu or message@cccu:
    • “ABC CU- has- deactivated-you-Debit_card. To-reactivate-contact:210957XXXX”
    • “This is an automated message from ABC Bank. Your ATM card has been suspended. To reactivate call urgent at 1-866-215-XXXX”
  • Text message originating from sms.alert@visa.com:
    • sms.alert@visa.com/VISA. (Card Blocked) Alert. For more information please call 1-877-269-XXXX”

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Exercise Caution: Be cautious of unexpected text messages, especially those requesting personal or sensitive information.
  • Verify Sources: Before responding to any text message, verify the sender’s identity and the legitimacy of the message.
  • Never Share Sensitive Information: Remember that reputable institutions like First Federal or its business partners will never ask for sensitive information like CVV2 codes or PINs. Be cautious of any communication that requests such details.

Remain vigilant against SMiShing scams and any communication that requests personal information. If you receive a suspicious text message, refrain from responding and report it to the appropriate authorities.
