There has been an increasing trend in tech scams that have been targeting individuals and businesses in our community.
How the Scam Works:
These scams often begin with a pop-up message, email, or phone call claiming there’s an issue with your computer, with scammers posing as representatives from well-known tech companies like Microsoft. They use technical language to convince you that your computer is infected, involved in illegal activity, or facing a serious threat, aiming to steal your money, obtain personal information, or gain access to your files.
How You Can Stay Protected:
- If you see a pop-up or error message with a phone number, do not call it. Genuine error messages from Microsoft will
never include phone numbers. - Unexpected tech support calls are likely scams, even if the caller ID appears local or legitimate.
- Never share your passwords or give remote access to your computer to someone who contacts you unexpectedly.
- Be cautious of any instructions or demands to make a payment through a Bitcoin ATM — these are red flags.
